Chavan’s RS replacement speculation on
With Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan set to enter the state legislature unopposed, the Congress circles are abuzz with speculation that an “outsider” could take his place in the Rajya Sabha.
Party sources said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already announced a “more expansive” reshuffle of his ministry in May and the high command could utilise Mr Chavan’s vacant Rajya Sabha seat to accommodate a new minister at the Centre.
However, a senior state leader said possibilities for anyone from Maharashtra being nominated for the seat in the Upper House are thin.
A Central leader said the party needs more experienced and competent leaders in the Rajya Sabha as the UPA is short of majority in the House.
The party high command has accommodated Union ministers Anad Sharma, Jairam Ramesh from states other than their home states in the Upper House.
Mr Rajiv Shukla too got elected from Maharashtra.
