Chavan hopes deal will end sena bmc rule
The final meeting to iron out all differences between the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) over the civic poll tieup was held at chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s official residence in Mumbai on Tuesday.
From the NCP, Madhukar Pichad, Chhagan Bhujbal, Sachin Ahir, Nawab Malik and Narendra Verma were present. Leaders from both the parties also spoke to NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Congress observer for Maharashtra Mohan Prakash over the phone before taking the final decision.
Welcoming the decision, the chief minister said, “Both the parties are confident that in the 2012 election, the Congress-NCP alliance will win and bad governance in the BMC will come to an end. I thank all the people who participated in the process (of negotiations).”
He was reportedly keen to forge the alliance as it would not be possible for the Congress alone to unseat the Shiv Sena-BJP combine, which is in power in the Mumbai corporation for the last 15 years.
Mr Pichad, the state NCP chief, said, “Pawar saheb had told us that the numbers were not so important, but putting an end to the bad administration was the priority.” He added: “The Congress is the bigger party and they showed the right attitude, for which we are grateful.”
