Chennai boys spearhead Test, under-19 triumphs
Sunday was a special day for Indian cricket, with the juniors beating defending champions Australia to win the Under-19 World Cup at Townsville, while the seniors registering a handsome innings-and-115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Hyderabad. The wins, in two hemispheres, were made possible by Chennai boys lending a significant hand.
Off-spinner R. Ashwin recorded the best bowling by an Indian against New Zealand in Tests, bagging 12 wickets for 85; while all-rounder Baba Aparajith, with 171 runs, five wickets and six catches, played a crucial role in the juniors’ triumph.
Said an elated BCCI president N. Srinivasan: “Many congratulations to the Under-19 side for winning the World Cup. They did it in style against a strong Australian side. All players contributed to the victory. Baba Aparajith’s performance was heartening, and he should go on to reach greater heights in future.”
