Chennai houses fined for promoting mosquito breeding

A few houses in the posh Anna Nagar area have been penalised for promoting the breeding of mosquitoes.

If you are ‘rearing’ mosquitoes with or without your knowledge, you will be fined, warns the Chennai corporation.

Poorly-maintained kitchen, unhygienic terrace with open tank and water stagnation which leads to the breeding of mosquitoes can result in the filing of a case against the property-owners and those living there as per the Tamil Nadu public health Act 1939, Chennai corporation health officer,
Dr P. Kuganantham,

said. “Last month, four spots were identified in Anna Nagar where mosquitoes were breeding from open plots and small sources that were storing storm ater. Notices were served and the building-owners penalised,” an assistant health officer attached to Anna Nagar said.

He added that most of the cases booked related to sanitation and public welfare that invited penalties ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 1,000.
