Chennaiites irked by hot morning, flooded evening
Chennai: Thursday dawned with sun burning bright and motorists and commuters sweating it out on roads. Soon after noon, skies opened up throughout Chennai ushering in waterlogging and traffic snarls.
Right from George Town to Tambaram, Siruseri to Ambattur, loud peals of thunder with lightening and heavy spell of rainfall were recorded. Weathermen predict that thunderstorm may continue for a few more days.
Dr Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, said monsoon currents were travelling towards the northern direction and hence, the city received copious rainfall.
He noted that the monsoon had now covered entire Kerala, Tamil Nadu and almost all parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Traffic jam, flooded roads, sewer overflow and tense policemen diverting traffic flow were visible in several parts of city. Many arterial roads got inundated within a few minutes of downpour.
Due to rain, a SriLankan Airlines flight and a Oman Air flight were diverted to Bengaluru.
