Cheque bounce cases grow, govt helpless
With lakhs of cheque bouncing cases pending before the judiciary, the law ministry has decided to seek the Law Commission of India’s recommendations to find a way out and reduce the pendency of such cases.
Though the Law Commission has in November 2008 asked for establishment of fast track courts to deal with such cases, the proposal has been a non-starter. Sources told this newspaper that the law ministry now wants the commission to have a look at the issue afresh.
It is understood that the government now wants to find a solution to the issue as the pendency in courts is affecting the credibility of the judicial system in the country. It was also felt that the huge pendency and non-prosecution of erring parties which allow bouncing of cases has also led to a negative environment for conducting business in the country. In its 213th report, Dr Justice A.R. Lakshmanan-led commission had lamented the fact that hardly anyone was being punished for bouncing of cheques.
