Noted author Chetan Bhagat had a lucky escape on Wednesday when the AI plane he was flying in skid off the runway in Kanpur.

Bhagat, who was flying in for a talk in the city, tweeted immediately after the plane, carrying 54 passengers and five crew members, went off the path following a tyre burst.

"Landed in Kanpur on AI. Emergency landing as plane skidded off runway into wet mud. Lucky save. Evacuations on now. Thank u God... quite something to step out on mud."

As passengers exited the damaged aircraft, he added: "The plane wheels are barely visible, dug deep into mud. Everyone's out now. Rattled but safe. Thanks all for ur concern."
