Clashes continue over J&K youth death
Jammu and Kashmir’s northern town of Bandipore and neighbouring areas continued to simmer over the killing of a local youth by Army.
On Friday, the region for the second day running witnessed protests by angry crowds during which clashes between them and security forces deployed in huge numbers to enforce strict security restrictions erupted leaving over a dozen people injured. Reports said that police and the CRPF swung bamboo sticks, burst teargas shells and also fired rifle shots in the air to disperse the surging crowds who made repeated attempts to enter the district headquarters. They also hurled rocks and other missiles on policemen, witnessed said. Local lawyers took out a silent protest along the streets of Bandipore and later visited the residence of the slain youth to offer condolences.
Residents alleged that the security forces while chasing protesters entered Keema village on the outskirts of the town and attacked residents and damaged their properties. Protests over the killing of 25-year-old Hilal Ahmed Dar at Aloosa, Bandipore on Tuesday night sparked off protests by huge crowds in several other Valley areas including Anantnag on Friday. But these protests passed off peacefully.
In Srinagar, the police detained pro-independence Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Muhammad Yasin Malik and 15 others as they began marching on the summer headquarters of the United Nations Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan.
