Clashes over killing of youth, Army apologises
Several people were injured in day-long clashes with the police in Rafiabad area of Jammu and Kashm-ir’s Baramulla district on Saturday following the killing of a local youth in Army firing. The Army said it regretted the incident and apologised to the bereaved family.
The villagers initially refused to bury the youth’s body, demanding the soldiers involved in the shooting be arrested first. The police used teargas and batons to disperse irate crowds which also blocked the Baramulla-Kupwara highway by placing the bullet-riddled corpse of the youth in the middle. The Army said the “innocent young man” died in an “accidental discharge of a weapon in the hands of a soldier” and announced compensation.
