Clashes as TMC worker dies in police custody
Dhaniakhali in Hooghly on Saturday turned into a war zone as local residents fought a pitched battle with the police over the death of a man allegedly in a police lock up.
Angry mob attacked Dhaniakhali police station and damaged some police vehicles. They also blocked the main road. They were protesting the death of Kazi Nasiruddin, a Trinamul Congress worker who they alleged was beaten to death in police lock up on Friday night.
According to eye witnesses, Nasiruddin had purchased a new mini truck and had gone to a mazar for offering prayers. At around 9 pm, when he was returning home, two policemen in plainclothes picked him up from Madan Mohantala. He was allegedly beaten by the cops all the way to the police station. “When we went to the police station at around midnight, he was lying virtually naked and motionless. About 10 policemen were standing around him. Later he was declared dead when taken to the hospital,” said Sabir Ali, a relative of the victim. Nasiruddin’s wife Manuja Begum later filed an FIR that her husband was allegedly beaten to death by the police.
