UP CM enjoys feel-good factor
The flame of hope still burns bright, there is relief in the air but disappointment is also creeping up.
UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav who completes 100 days in office — he was sworn in on March 15 — continues to enjoy the feel-good factor that his government ushered in but stray clouds of disappointment are also making an appearance.
As the country’s youngest chief minister forges ahead in implementing his party’s manifesto, the government, however, seems to be losing direction.
The law and order situation that began plummeting with caste wars and post-poll violence shows no signs of improvement. In majority of the police stations in the state, there has been no change of guard yet and old prejudices continue to trigger unrest in the area — like it did in Mathura recently.
The power crisis is at its worst this summer and there is no respite in sight. Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav recently made a stinging statement when he said that some officers were deliberately creating a power crisis by allowing 40 per cent theft in the sector.
The bureaucracy continues to dominate the government and this is leading to disillusionment among party workers. The chief minister, known for his amiable nature and mild manners, has been unable to crack the whip on bureaucrats who are used to his predecessor’s whip-lashing ways. His goodness is slowly being used against him by those who want to discredit his leadership.
The chief minister, however, has ensured that the promises made to the people in his party’s manifesto are being fulfilled.
