CM post lighter responsibility for Chavan: Deshmukh

Union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, one time aspirant to the chief minister's post in Maharashtra, on Monday said he had "very high" expectations from new incumbent Prithviraj Chavan.

Mr Deshmukh said Mr Chavan had a "comparatively light" responsibility as the chief minister as he had the experience of working in the Prime Minister's Office.

Prithviraj Chavan took over as the chief minister from Ashok Chavan, who resigned after his name figured in connection with a housing scam in Mumbai.

"Definitely, he is an experienced person. He has served many years as Union minister and was also incharge of Prime Minister's Office (PMO)," Mr Deshmukh told reporters here.

The Union minister for heavy industry said he had very high expectations from Prithviraj Chavan's tenure as the chief minister of Maharashtra.

"So having experience of the PMO, the Chief Minister's Office is comparatively a light responsibility. Expectations are very high and we all are supporting him," Mr Deshmukh said.

He was asked about his expectations from Chavan. Mr Deshmukh, who held the post of the chief minister for two terms, had to resign from office in 2008 in the wake of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.

He was a front-runner for the post of chief minister in the wake of Ashok Chavan's resignation till the party high command opted for a new face for the crucial post.
