CM slams Captain, alliance crashes
The ruling AIADMK and DMDK, which fought the 2011 Assembly election together but drifted apart before the local body polls, parted ways Wednesday. The break-up followed an acrimonious debate in the state Assembly.
A fiery verbal exchange between AIADMK chief and CM J. Jayalalithaa and DMDK founder Vijayakanth, who is the Opposition leader in the House, culminated in mass eviction of the actor-politician and his legislators from the Assembly.
Trouble began after DMDK MLA V.C. Chandrakumar continued to raise the issue of increase in milk price and bus fares despite repeated explanations by the treasury benches that the hike was inevitable.
The ruling party members were further irked by remarks that AIADMK should have faced the civic body election after effecting the price hike.
Finance minister O. Panneerselvam reminded DMDK that it was because of Ms Jayalalithaa that the party was able to open its innings in the Assembly. “The votes you [DMDK] polled were for our Amma. Forgetting this, you are conducting yourself like any other Opposition party.”
