CM: War memorial will stay
Bengaluru, July 16: The pressure to give martyrs a fitting memorial from the community of soldiers who live in the city has been huge. On Friday, as one of the last acts before the Legislature was adjourned sine die, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa announced that he was going back on his earlier announcement and restoring the controversial war memorial to its original site — the Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain Park in the city.
Environmentalists have protested the construction of the memorial in the park, arguing that it would destroy the green cover. But making a statement in the Council on Friday, Mr Yeddyurappa said the memorial would be a tourist spot and that “only a hundred eucalyptus trees would be cut for the memorial.”
In addition, sources close to MP, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, prime mover behind the memorial said that once the memorial was built, the green cover would be restored in its entirety.
