CMs to break ice on Cauvery water
Chief minister Jayalalithaa held one last crucial discussion on Wednesday with senior officials at the secretariat on the eve of her departure to Bengaluru to hold talks with her Karnataka counterpart on Thursday.
The Tamil Nadu delegation, led by Ms Jayalalithaa, will travel by chartered aircraft just after noon and land at the old HAL airport in Bengaluru where tight security arrangements have been made for moving the visitors to a luxury hotel (Leela Palace) where the meeting will take place.
Sources in the government said it was decided to seek sharing of water on pro rata basis under the distress sharing formula. “We will stress on release of backlog as sought by the government before the Supreme Court earlier.”
Tamil Nadu had filed a petition in the Supreme Court, on November22, for a direction to Karnataka to release 52.8 tmcft of water till February 2013 to save crops raised in 15 lakh acres.
Senior officials including chief secretary, PWD secretary, Cauvery technical committee chairperson attended the meeting during which the chief minister is learnt to have discussed the stand to be taken and points to be raised with Mr Jagadish Shettar.
