COI to probe 1984 killing of Sikhs in Haryana village
Haryana government on Saturday appointed a one man commission of Inquiry to probe the killing of Sikhs at a village in the state's Rewari district during the 1984 riots.
Headed by retired Judge of Punjab and Haryana high court Justice T.P. Garg, the COI will probe the killing of innocent Sikhs in Haud-Chillar village in Rewari district and damage caused to their property during incidents of violence there in November 1984, chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said in a statement.
The commission has been appointed following demands from different sections of people for an inquiry into various aspects of the incidents of violence in the village.
The COI would submit its report to the state government as soon as possible, but not later than six months from the date of its first sitting, Hooda said.
The commission would also recommend measures, which might be adopted to meet the ends of justice connected with the incident under inquiry and consider such matters as might be found relevant in the course of the probe, he said.
The chief minister said the commission would devise and specify its own procedures for conduct of the inquiry subject to provisions of the Commission of Inquiry Act of 1952.
The inquiry by the commission would be in regard to complaints or allegations that might be made before the commission by any individual or association in such form, as might be specified by the commission, the statement said.
On November 2, 1984, the entire Haud Chillar village was burnt down along with its Sikh population and a Gurdwara.
The village consisting of torched houses, a burnt Sikh shrine and scattered human bones has been discovered recently.
