Colony named after Suu Kyi
Burmese Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi visited the house of Muddakka, a Dalit, where she tasted traditional Rayalaseema sweetmeats and had a brief interaction with her college-going children about their higher education plans.
It came as a pleasant surprise to her when she unveiled a name board of a Dalit colony in the village as the board read ‘Aung San Suu Kyi Colony’. She also inaugurated a community-managed health and nutrition centre.
When Suu Kyi asked farmers if the 100 days of work guaranteed through MNREGS was adequate to make a decent living, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy intervened and said that apart from the 100-day guarantee by the Central government, the state government was also guaranteeing an additional 25 days of work to the rural people.
Sitting on panchayat Rachchabanda along with Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh and CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, Suu Kyi asked the women associated with self-help groups in the village about the freedom they enjoyed at home and how much had they benefited from government sponsored schemes.
During a PowerPoint presentation on rural development via MNREGS, Suu Kyi asked the authorities about the ratio of women working under the scheme, how it financially empowered them and if the wages paid to women were equal to men. She asked if any protection was being given to women if they complained about irregularities in the scheme.
While bidding farewell to the Burmese leader, Kiran Kumar Reddy presented her with a Buddha statue and a Dharmavaram silk cloth. The CM also announced development projects of `1.5 crore for Papasanipalli village.
