Communalism, terrorism, Naxalism to dominate NIC meet
Communalism, terrorism and Naxalism are likely to figure prominently at the next meeting of the National Integration Council (NIC) expected to be held in December.
Standing Committee of the NIC, headed by home minister P. Chidambaram, on Tuesday discussed the agenda for the next NIC meeting, official sources said here.
The sources said the draft agenda would be circulated soon. The Centre recently has constituted the Standing Committee of the NIC with Chidambaram as its chairman and four union ministers and nine chief ministers as members.
The NIC has been reconstituted on April 5, 2010. The union ministers, who are members of the committee, are Pranab Mukherjee, Sharad Pawar, Mamata Banerjee and M. Veerappa Moily.
The chief ministers of West Bengal, Assam, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Gujarat are also members of the committee.
Co-opted members of NIC are Shobhana Bhartia, chairperson, Hindustan Times; Asgar Ali Engineer; Fali S. Nariman; Barkha Dutt, group editor, NDTV; and E. Ahmed, president, Indian Union Muslim League.
