Complaint against boxer’s coach
The police on Wednesday registered a complaint against a boxer and an assistant coach in the case of Manisha Chauhan, who was rendered comatose after being injured in a sparring duel last week.
Manisha, a national-level boxer, was sparring with some of her teammates when she suddenly
collapsed after taking an upper cut to the jaw. She was not wearing protective headgear at the time of the incident. She was rushed to the Nair Hospital, where she was diagnosed with brain haemorrage and is currently on life support.
“Based on the statements recorded from Manisha’s parents, we registered a complaint under Sections 338 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code against Noor Ali, a boxer in the team as well as an assistant to the team’s coach. No arrests have been made yet,” said an officer with the Samta Nagar police. The police will be verifying allegations made by Manisha’s parents and will take further action after inquiries are complete. Manisha
herself is yet to give a detailed statement, as she has not recovered fully. The police said that much of the investigation depends on her statement.
Manisha was injured while at a boxing centre in Kandivali on October 2. Her teammates collected `93,000 for her treatment.
