Confusion over Speaker’s house
Two departments of the Union urban development ministry do not seem to be in consonance with each other on whether or not Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is still the allottee of 6, Krishna Menon Marg bungalow in the New Delhi area.
The directorate of estates (DoE), dealing with allotment of accommodation to senior constitutional functionaries, ministers and politicians, has maintained that the bungalow is not allotted to anybody.
However, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), dealing with maintenance of official residences, maintained that the said premises was allotted to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Both the departments were replying to queries under the Right to Information Act sought by petitioner S.C. Agarwal.
Information furnished by the CPWD on June 6 says: “As per office record, the bungalow No. 6, Krishna Menon Marg, is in the name of Smt. Meira Kumar.”
Further, the reply to a query on whether the bungalow had been allotted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Foundation, the CPWD again reiterated that the bungalow is “allotted” in the name of the Lok Sabha Speaker.
However, on the question of unauthorised occupancy of the bungalow, the CPWD maintained that it was beyond the purview of the department as it only carried out maintenance work.
