Cong: BJP is Bangaru Judeo Party

The Congress on Wednesday launched a frontal attack on the BJP-led NDA for making Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the target of their attack on the 2G spectrum allocation controversy. “They are paper tigers,” it said, and asked the BJP how many corrupt leaders it has been shielding.

Dubbing the main Opposition as the Bangaru Judeo Party (BJP), Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi asked: “How can a party of Dilip Singh Judeo and Bangaru Lakshman (former BJP president) can have a rally against corruption?” He drew attention to corruption scandals in which the names of these leaders had surfaced in the past. He said the “champions of inaction on corruption are preaching it to those who have declared a war on corruption”. “It was a rally by hypocrites who have got their names registered in the Guinness Book of Records for their expertise in parliamentary disruptions,” he said. While listing out how many corruption charges the BJP leaders have been facing he asked why the main Opposition has been shielding controversial Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.
Dismissing the BJP’s campaign against corruption as “political grandstanding” and an “effort to keep the pot boiling”, Mr Singhvi questioned the justification of the demand for a JPC, saying the Opposition should tell what extra objectives such a probe will achieve because different agencies are currently investigating the 2G spectrum scam.
On the BJP’s demand for the Prime Minister’s resignation if he cannot answer the Opposition’s questions, the Congress spokesperson said the main Opposition party had launched a similar attack against Dr Manmohan Singh during Lok Sabha elections last year. “And people rejected them,” he said, adding that it was a case of the pot calling the kettle black. “They (BJP leaders) are paper tigers, not real tigers.”
