Cong, BJP gear up for local polls
The election campaign for 126 local bodies in Rajasthan has intensified while the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP were vying to capture the municipal power. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot said his party was confident in making a victory while the BJP launched its campaign focusing on alleged failure of the Congress government on all fronts.
According to the Election Commission, the polls will decided fate of over 10,000 candidates while 34 Lakh voters will be eligible to exercise their franchise on August 18. State BJP president Arun Chaturvedi visited several places, appealing to the voters for their support. Mr Gehlot said that his party is banking on all the developmental projects carried out by the state government as well as the UPA government’s achievements. “Despite the BJP’s false propaganda, the voters had shown their confidence in Congress in 2009 poll for 46 local bodies. The people also supported us in panchayat elections,” the chife minsiter said. The Congress had constituted a campaign committee and former minister Chandarbhan was monitoring the election campaign.
“The BJP has no scope in the municipal elections,” Mr Chandarbhan said.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Vasundhra Raje under took a road show in two towns in Shekhawati region on Tuesday and said the Congress government had lost its credibility in a very short period.
She said the Congress has no right to ask people to cast their vote in their favour.
The faction ridden BJP tried to put an united face in the local bodies elections.
