Cong, BJP seek action in honour killings
Suggesting that there is a need for a suitable stringent law to tackle with “honour killings”, the Congress on Wednesday asked the government to show resolve in dealing with the menace.
Even main Opposition BJP described the recent spurt in cases of such killings a “dangerous trend” and dubbed the incidents as “cold-blooded murders”. The party also demanded that provisions should be made to try all such cases in fast track courts to bring the culprits to book.
“We are deeply concerned over the recent spate of violence and murder in the name of honour killings. There are various levels at which this violence and murder needs to be addressed and studied. We believe that time has come now to take a national view in this matter,” AICC spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said.
Ms Natrajan suggested that if the existing criminal law of the land is not sufficient, then the “government should consider the passage of any suitable law” to tackle the problem.
“This happens in various permutations in different regions and we believe a holistic view should be taken,” she said.
“In any event this violence cannot be condoned by any civilised society and must be put down with a firm hand,” she added.
The AICC spokesperson, however, sidestepped a direct question on party’s stand on “same gotra marriages”. She said, “The party has no view on this. But violence and murder for any reason cannot be condoned. Constitutional and criminal laws should be upheld at all costs.”
Asked whether Congress supports khap panchayats’ demand for a change in Hindu Marriage Act, she said, “We have not taken any view on changes in the Hindu Marriage Act too.”
