Cong campaign: Top leaders to stay away
The Congress’ campaign against the BJP and the Sangh Parivar for their “double talk” on the issue of corruption and support to civil rights activist Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev will begin from Sunday.
But the top leadership of the party and the government is unlikely to be involved in it as a strategy. “Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may not be involved in the month-long campaign to expose communal forces behind the agitation by Anna Hazare and Ramdev on the issue of corruption and black money,” sources said.
Senior leader and Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee will hold a media interaction in Kolkata on Sunday to kickstart the party’s nationwide campaign in the wake of agitations by Baba Ramdev and Mr Hazare.
The party is also organising a public rally in Raipur on June 26 in which Central leaders are expected to attend. The decision for the Raipur rally was taken at a meeting of the Congress coordination committee for Chhattisgarh.
State Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel, who attended the meeting, said a decision has been taken to “expose the BJP-RSS hand” behind the agitations on the one hand and also apprise the people of the “rampant corruption” of the BJP government in Chhattisgarh.
The party has also decided to demand a “white paper” from the Raman Singh government on alleged corruption there.
The AICC has asked all state units to give possible dates for the rallies in their regions so as to ensure that the campaign is completed by the time the Monsoon Session of Parliament begins. The Congress has also brought out a booklet, “The Congress View on Present Situation”.
