Cong concern over Afzal case fake: BJP
Alleging that the Congress was “shedding crocodile tears” over Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s conviction, the main Opposition BJP on Tuesday said Congress was also disrespecting the patriotism of Indian Muslims by raising Hindu-Muslim terror issue. A recent remark by BJP chief Nitin Gadkari on this issue, where he had
attacked the Congress, had created a controversy with both the Congress and a majority section within BJP, criticising Mr Gadkari over the language used. Mr Gadkari had recently asked the Congress whether Afzal was its “son-in-law” and this was preventing it from hanging him.
Speaking on the issue, senior BJP leader and party’s national vice-president, Mr Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said “The BJP and our president Nitin Gadkari have only placed the common belief on the Afzal Guru case before the people. But the Congress is shedding Afzali tears and in the process disrespecting the patriotism of crores of Indian Muslims. No Muslim in India supports terror.” The BJP has often accused the Congress of delaying Afzal’s hanging for minority appeasement.
Mr Naqvi said while on one hand the Congress and its top brass were maintaining a “conspicuous silence” on the Afzal case, on the other some of its leaders were raising the “bogey” of Hindu and Muslim terror. When asked about the Congress general secretary Mr Digvijay Singh’s comments against the BJP chief, Mr Naqvi said, “Congress leaders should be concerned about their party.”
