Cong convoy escapes Naxal attack
A Congress convoy carrying nearly a dozen senior leaders of the party escaped a Naxal attack narrowly at Nireli in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district on Friday.
The incident comes less than a month after Maoists ambushed a Congress convoy at Jiram Ghati in Bastar district killing 30 people, virtually wiping out top leadership of the party in Chhattisgarh in the process.
According to a senior police officer in Dantewada district, around 50 armed Naxals opened indiscriminate fire on a mine protected vehicle (MPV) deployed in road opening operation at Nareli. The road opening operation was being carried out to clear passage for the Congress convoy in which senior party leaders such as late Mahendra Karma’s son-in-law Sushil Maurya, Konta Congress MLA Kawasi Lakhma’s son Harish and Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president Deepak Mishra and a host of local party leaders were travelling.
Security forces engaged in road opening operation launched retaliatory attack leading to a fierce gunfight between them.
Later, forces in the pilot vehicles accompanying the Congress convoy rushed to the spot to join the road opening party after diverting the route of the cavalcade of Congressmen to Dantewada via Bhansi.
