As he had promised, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi led his party to a hat-trick victory, with the Congress winning an absolute majority of 78 in the 126-member Assembly.
The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad and the BJP were wiped out in the state, with the latter failing to touch the double-digit mark. The Congress won 78 seats, AGP 10, BJP five, All-India United Democratic Front 18 and the Bodoland People’s Party 12 seats.
