Cong plans privilege motion against Badals

Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday stated that the Congress will move a privilege motion against Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and the then finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal for misleading the House.

Speaking to reporters today Amarinder Singh stated that the then finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal had told the Punjab Assembly that the fiscal deficit situation was stable and in control. “Even the chief minister had applauded his minister’s statement. But now the Badal government has left the state and its population in a mess. They have misled the House and we will bring in a privilege motion against them,” he stated.
The former chief minister held the Shiromani Akali Dal solely responsible for the state’s current financial mess. “When we left office the fiscal deficit stood at `48,000 crores. However, by the time the SAD government ends its term we think that the deficit will touch a whopping `1,55,000 crores creating a nightmare for the state,” he stated. Mr Amarinder stated that while several states were outperforming Indian economy’s growth rate of over nine percent, the growth of Punjab stood abysmally at 4.7 per cent.
He stated that the Congress will return to power in the state Assembly elections which were 14 months away. “We will save the state from financial crunch,” he stated.
He stated that though there are some differences in the state’s top leadership these would be resolved as the party will fight the polls unitedly.
On the issue of subsidies, which are being blamed for the high fiscal deficit, he stated that the Congress will not discontinue the subsidies entirely as it was a party of the “aam aadmi”. “How can we discontinue subsidies and overlook the welfare and interests of over 13 lakh BPL families and six lakh antodaya families in the state?” he asked.
