Cong sees no crisis, backs PM on FDI
The Trinamul Congress think tank, sources said, is working overtime to prepare a detailed statement based on facts and figures to slam the Centre’s decision to alow FDI in multi-brand retail and hike the price of diesel.
Meanwhile, the Congress on Saturday maintained that there was “no crisis” over the strong opposition expressed by the alliance partners and that the party was fully behind Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue.
Congress spokesman P.C. Chako, ruling out any rollbacks, said they were “not surprise decisions”. He added that the decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail was “well thought out and thoroughly considered”. “The Congress president has expressed full support to the government’s decision on FDI in multi-brand retail. The PM has the full support of the party on the issue,” Mr Chako said.
He also downplayed the Trinamul and Samajwadi Party’s opposition, saying “differences amid coalition partners can be sorted out”. “We hope that good sense will prevail on all the parties and that the government will have full support from all parties on the decisions,” he added.
