Cong team meets PM to oust Omar
In a significant development which may cause embarrassment to Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and his allies from the Congress party, a delegation of about fifty state Congress leaders and activists have met Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and some other senior ministers and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi to demand dismissal of the Omar Abdullah government and imposition of Governor’s rule “to save the state from further ruin.”
Led by a senior Congress leader from the state Chaudhary Muhammad Aslam, the delegation, which also had on it MPs, some legislators and other functionaries, met the Prime Minister in Parliament House on Tuesday and apprised him of latest political situation in Kashmir Valley. It also sought his intervention in revamping the party apparatus in the state on the plea that those at the helm of affairs at present had caused tremendous damage to its image in the state.
The delegation, said one of the members Mr P. Namgyal, the MP from Ladakh, opposed the idea of repealing or amending Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act as has been recommended by the chief minister. The party high command was cautioned that if required measures to control the situation in Kashmir Valley were not taken immediately, the unrest could spread to Jammu areas. The delegation also met finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and the defence minister.
