Cong welcomes probe reopening
The Congress on Thursday welcomed a special court’s permission to CBI to reinvestigate the Malegaon blast of 2006 in wake of “confession” statements made by Swami Aseemanand linking Hindu groups to terror acts.
“It is very good. We welcome it,” party general secretary Digvijay Singh told reporters when asked to comment on the order of the Special MCOCA court in Mumbai on the blast that left 37 people dead and over 100 injured.
Asserting that the Congress does not believe in saffron terror, he said that anyone guilty of terror activities needed to be punished. Referring to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks, he asked as to why he did not inform the CBI when he was aware of the presence of “doubtful elements” in the organisation.
“I only want to say that in case Bhagwat had information about such doubtful elements why he did not inform the police or the CBI about them,” Mr Singh asked. He said even now, if there were some “suspicious” elements in the RSS, it was Mr Bhagwat’s duty to tell the police or the investigating authorities about them. Mr Singh asserted that time had come for the BJP and RSS to introspect and find out “as to why unwanted elements had become associated with the Sangh Parivar.”
Asked whether the Muslim youth who have been arrested in connection with the Malegaon blasts should now be freed in the wake of the disclosures of Aseemanand, he said that it was for the investigate agencies to look into the matter.
