Cong yet to decide on Tamil in courts
With all the political parties having made up their mind on the use of Tamil in Chennai high court, the Congress alone has become the odd man out. When pointedly asked about the stand of the Congress, party spokesperson Manish Tewari said that the party is yet to form its view. When pressed further, he said there
are “constitutional limitations” to the use of regional languages in constitutional courts. He opined that it’s a very sensitive issue and therefore would not want to give his opinion without a structured discussion within the party. He also promised to get back to the media after due consultations with the party high-command. And also he added that whatever he may have to say on the subject may be misconstrued as he is one of the party spokespersons. But when pressed for a reaction in his personal capacity he said that if a regional language is allowed in one constitutional court, then the same lawyer may turn up at the Supreme Court and demand that he be allowed to use his own language as he has been allowed to use the regional language in another constitutional court.
It is pertinent to note that another national party, namely the BJP has already expressed its view in favour of using regional languages in high courts. The lawyers of the Chennai high court and also the lawyers of the Madurai bench had earlier taken to a fast unto death demanding that Tamil be used as a medium for arguing cases. Finally, it was allowed. But when the lawyers insisted on a written order from the judges, they too had said that there were “constitutional limitations”.
