Congress allows minister to quit
The Congress high command on Friday gave permission to controversial Congress state minister Manoj Chakraborty who had raised the banner of revolt against chief minister Mamata Banerjee, to resign. The Congress party may or may not choose another party MLA to be given a ministerial berth in place of Mr Chakraborty.
After receiving this news, the Berhampore Congress MLA said that he was relieved and delighted.
He claimed that both the state party unit and central leadership accepted his demand because it was legitimate.
He would submit his resignation to governor M.K. Narayanan on Saturday.
On Monday, in a minor reshuffle, Ms Banerjee had stripped Mr Chakraborty of two important ministerial portfolio and as a consolation prize gave him the post of minister of state of an insignificant department.
An angry Mr Chakraborty had declared Ms Banerjee’s move dictatorial and shot off resignation letters to party president Sonia Gandhi and other central leaders.
