Congress for Assam polls before April 14
The ruling Congress government has decided to propose the Assembly elections in Assam to be held before the Rongali Bihu and Assamese New Year that is on April 14.
The decision was taken recently at a meeting of the senior Congress leaders, which was also attended by AICC general secretary and in-charge of Assam affairs Digvijay Singh. Besides reviewing the implementation of the manifesto of the party in the 2006 elections, the meeting also discussed the probable dates for elections.
In a related development, the chief electoral officer’s office has also proposed to the chief election commissioner that polling should be organised in two phases in the state.
Sources in the office of state election department said that they are going to publish the final electoral rolls for the elections on January 5. At present, the department is updating the database, which includes merging of photographs and printing the supplementary list, which will come to an end on January 3.
In view of the elections, which now looks set to be held in April, the Assam governor has also summoned the Assembly session from February 1 to 8.
