Congress may okay Telangana verdict

Hyderabad: Top sources in the AICC indicate that Congress president Sonia Gandhi has decided to end the Telangana deadlock. The Congress Working Committee, the party’s highest policy-making body, will be told within the next few days to decide in favour of creating Telangana state.

Sources said that Gandhi came to the conclusion that creating the state was the only way to end the crisis. She reportedly got inputs from intelligence agencies stating that there will be no major problem if the Congress sings the Telangana tune, as the Telugu Desam and the BJP are already in favour of the new state.

Sources said that after the CWC decision favouring the formation of Telangana, the Union government will 'initiate' steps towards implementation of the decision.

The Congress president also reportedly decided to take all steps, including protecting the interests of various sections of people living in Hyderabad in the event of the division of the state.
She reportedly came to the decision that as long as the Congress handles the situation, there will not be any major resentment from any quarter.

Only the Congress can address all proble-ms that arise out of division of the state, it was felt, rather than any other party, particularly the Telangana Rash-tra Samiti whose agenda for Telangana is bound to create controversies and confrontati-ons among the regions.

It is reliably learnt, that the Congress will not have any tie-up with the TRS.

CWC to meet in next few days

AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, indicated that the CWC will meet in the next few days to finalise its stand on Telangana. The CWC will meet hopefully before month end and take a final decision on Telangana. “No more consultations will be held on the issue. The decision is going to be final,” Digvijay Sing said.

In an informal talk with the media on Saturday, Senior Congress leader Janardhan Dwivedi said a final decision on Telangana will be announced before the monsoon session of Parliament. “We are confident that there are clear indications after yesterday’s Core Committee meeting that the High Command is favourably inclined towards Telangana. CWC’s endorsement may just be a formality,” said a senior minister from Telangana.

It is reliably learnt, that the Congress will not have any tie-up with the TRS and also not involve it in the process for Telangana.

“There is an aversion against the TRS among certain sections of people in both the regions. TRS leaders issued several provocative statements in the event of formation of a new state, but the Congress did not make any such statements. Hence the Congress alone will be credited for formation of Telangana,” said sources from the party.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
