Congress mulls CWC meet over Naxal issue
The Congress has yet to decide whether a meeting of the working committee be called to discuss the Naxal issues whose activities have spread over in about half a dozen states targeting the state power.
Asked whether the party should call a meeting of the CWC, the highest decision making body, in view of the recent Naxal violence killing police and innocent people in Chhattisgarh, party officials said “we don’t know.”
The party leaders are speaking in different voices on how to contain the Naxal menace mainly because the perception of the government and the Congress officials differ on this issue.
The CWC had earlier discussed the price rise issue atleast twice but could not have deliberations on the Naxal activities which have spread in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharshtra, Andhra, Orissa,West Benal and partly Bihar.
The Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, in her column “ Letter to the Congresspersons” published in the April issue of Congress Sandesh, viewed: “While we must address acts of terror decisively and forcefully, we have to address the root causes of Naxalism. The rise of Naxalism is a reflection of the need for our development initiatives to reach the grass roots.”
