A constable of the West Bengal police, missing from the police barrack since Saturday night, shot three persons, including an young couple, to death in broad day light in North 24 Parganas. The shooting took place in Barrackpore on Sunday morning. The victims, Manabendra Pal (39), an employee of Cossipore Gun & Shell factory and his wife Sarbani (35), were residents of Palta.
The third victim was Rohini Roy (45), elder sister of Manabendra. The accused constable, Piyush Ghosh, (batch no. 909) of the 8th battalion of the state armed police (SAP), is absconding now. The triple murder was the outcome of an extramarital affair between Piyush and Sarbani, preliminary investigations revealed.
The 26-year-old constable had invited the couple over phone for a meeting to the Indian Air Force ground at Ardali Bazar, said special inspector-general of police (presidency range) Siddh Nath Gupta after inspecting the spot with senior district police officers. Official sources disclosed that Piyush had planned the meeting on the pretext of a settlement after Sarbani’s in-laws came to know of her extramarital affair with him.
Rohini and Pritam Roy, brother of Sarbani accompanied the couple to the meeting. At around 8.30 am they met Piyush in police uniform.
