Cop threatens to end life over transfer issue
A head constable attached to the Puducherry Armed Police staged high drama climbing the Doordarshan Kendra building housing the television tower in Villianur and threatening to jump if the police department did not revoke his order of transfer.
Police sources said Melino Francis, 45, of Sudhana Nagar in Mudaliarpet climbed up the Doordarshan Kendra building where he was posted for security and made repeated pleas to his colleagues telling them to ensure that the authorities rescinded his transfer order without delay.
Francis was earlier working in the Orleanpet police station and was shifted to the Crime Records Bureau and was again shifted to PAP this month. He was on duty at the building along with another constable Ilavarasan.
He was irked by the frequent transfers and when his colleagues Pandian and Parasuraman approached him to relieve him as usual at around 10.30 am he refused to go and instead climbed up the building carrying his rifle.
Francis fired twice in the air with his rifle and kept telling his colleagues that he would not climb down until DIG I.D. Shukla arrived at the scene. Information was sent and a team of police officials rushed to the spot. Extending assurances that his demands would be considered the police personnel brought him down.
