Cops arrest woman Naxal suspect

The Delhi police has arrested a 36-year-old woman who was wanted by the Chhattisgarh police.

The accused, Soni Sori, is a suspected Maoist and a school teacher. The police said that she was allegedly hiding in south Delhi; the Chhattisgarh police with assistance of the Delhi police conducted a raid on her hideout on Tuesday.
“The accused is an aunt of Lingaram Kodopi, who was recently arrested for allegedly acting as a conduit between the Maoists and Essar, was apprehended from Katwaria Sarai area. We raided the premises on a tip-off from the Chhattisgarh police and arrested Sori,” a senior police official said adding that, Sori is from the Naxal-affected Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh.
Five cases were registered against Sori in Chhattisgarh and she has been charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including extortion cases.
The accused was produced before a Delhi court and later she was sent to judicial custody for a day in Tihar jail.
Earlier in July 2010, the Chhattisgarh police has issued warrants against Sori, her husband and her nephew Kodopi for their alleged involvement in an attack on a Congress worker and his son.
The sources also confirmed that the raids conducted by the Chhatisgarh police on the house of activist Kavita Srivastava in Jaipur to apprehend Sori but could not find her there.
Sori had earlier contested the police version of Kodopi’s arrest claiming that plainclothes policemen in a white Bolero car picked him up from his grandfather’s house in Palnar village and not while carrying money for Maoists.
“The Chhattisgarh police will urge the court for the transit remand of the accused to take her to Chhattisgarh as all the cases against her are registered there,” a senior police official said.
