Cops get a day to quiz Asaram
The Jodhpur police on Sunday grilled controversial godman Asaram Bapu for hours for his alleged involvement in a sexual assault case. He denied all the charges levelled against him. The police took him to the site of the crime to recreate the scene.
A team of doctors also conducted a potency test on him and found him to be potent. A local court has given the police his custody for one day for further interrogation.
According to the police, Asaram was cooperating with the police in its investigations. “Though he has denied the charges, there are things proving his involvement,” Jodhpur police commissioner Biju George Joseph. He said a team of doctors examined his health and he was found fit. The police produced him before a local court on Sunday in Jodhpur and sought his remand for two days but the court granted only one day in police custody.
The police took him at the site of the crime, an ashram on the outskirts of Jodhpur, and asked him to recall the incident but he denied doing anything wrong. The police also prepared a map of the site in his presence. “We want to make a watertight case. You will find all the details when we file the chargesheet,” Mr Joseph said.
A police team led by Mr Joseph grilled him at the armed constabulary’s headquarters in Jodhpur on Sunday for hours. His lawyer Jagmal was allowed to meet him but was not allowed to be present during the questioning. The godman’s followers gathered in a large number in Jodhpur. The police had a tough time controlling the followers, who created a problem for the cops when they were on their way to produce Asaram before the court. The police had to resort to a mild lathicharge.
