UP cops get jail for fabricating evidence
A Delhi court on Monday sentenced six Uttar Pradesh policemen, including a superintendent of police, to two years in jail for illegally confining the relatives of a man and fabricating evidence against them for his act of marrying a girl against the wishes of her family.
After hearing the argument of both, the prosecution and the defence, additional sessions judge Poonam Chaudhary refused to take a lenient view against the guilty police personnel, saying that they violated the rights of citizens instead of protecting them.
The judge said, “Keeping in view the facts that offence has been committed by police officials who are supposed to protect the rights of the citizens and ensure that no indiscriminate arrest is made which violates their rights, I am of the view that leniency in such case is not in the interest of society at large.”
Apart from the jail term, the court slapped a fine of Rs 6,000 on convict A.K. Singh, the superintendent of police and Rs 18,000 each on Satpal Singh, the then SHO, Sukhpal Singh and Satbir Singh, both constables.
The court had convicted the police personnel under various sections of IPC.
