Cops hold Hamla drill
Chennai/Thanjavur: The state police in co-ordination with the Indian Coast Guard has launched another edition of “Operation Hamla”, a drill in the coastal areas of the state, to check the preparedness of the district police in case of an infiltration by terrorists through the sea route.
The 48-hour security drill on land and sea, which began on Wednesday night, will be a cat and mouse game, wherein forces will protect designated areas from being breached by undercover commandos acting as terrorists.
The Chennai city police on Thursday evening said that they had secured 17 “terrorists”. “Costal Security Group of the state police and the Coast Guard will send commandos as terrorists. The district police personnel will have to track them down and ‘arrest’ them,” the police said.
While police personnel have been briefed about the mock operation, they haven’t been told when and where the intruders will land.
The police have thus sounded a red alert at all ports, commercial complexes, railway station, bus terminals and places of historical importance, besides the coastline, the entry point of the gang of “terrorists”.
"The idea is to apprehend the fake terrorists at the earliest before they breach designated security covers. Every place of public gathering will be monitored by police personnel,” the police said.
