The son of a corporate honcho was arrested in a hit-and-run case in which a motorcyclist was seriously wounded, while a minor girl was killed and three others injured in two separate road accidents in south Mumbai, police said today.

Ankush Shahra (24), son of Dinesh Shahra, managing director of Ruchi Soya, an edible oil major, was arrested after a hot chase by police after his Porsche car allegedly rammed into a motorcycle at Marine Drive in the wee hours of Sunday, police said.

Ankush, who was allegedly drunk, tried to escape in his car, but was chased down after a beat constable and some onlookers alerted the local police station, senior inspector of Marine Drive police station Z.M. Gajrad told PTI.

Ankush Shahra was produced before a holiday court the same day and was released on bail while victim Alauddin Imamuddin Haq is admitted to the Bombay Hospital where doctors attending on him said he was recovering 'slowly'.

He has suffered injuries on his head and legs. In another incident, Shifa, a minor girl was killed and three of her companions injured after the Honda City driven by her cousin's friend hit a road divider and a wall before crashing into a stationary Toyota car on Peddar Road, also in south Mumbai, in the wee hours today.

According to police and eyewitness, the impact of the crash was so severe that the Toyota overturned and the victims' Honda City reduced to a heap of twisted metal after it rolled several times over.

"The accident took place when a boy, who was at the steering wheel of the Honda City, lost control over the vehicle while moving at a high speed following which it dashed into the divider and subsequently hit a wall and a car," Deputy Police Commissioner Rajkumar Vhatkar said.

All the four occupants of the car were rushed to a nearby hospital where Shifa was declared dead on arrival. Her sister Sania is critical, while the two boys accompanying them were discharged after treatment.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
