Corporation goes strong
Kochi: The functioning of the city corporation is almost unaffected by the indefinite strike called by pro-Left employees in protest against the state government’s decision to implement Contributory Pension Scheme from this April.
According to the civic authorities no public service has been disrupted as working employees have been given additional charge, and Janasevanakendram, which offers a host of services to the public, is working as usual.
“In the nine departments, more employees are on strike in the town planning and engineering sections. Functioning of the health, revenue and other departments is almost normal. Most importantly, major services like tax collection, functioning of Janasevanakendram is normal. All department heads are also in office,” said a top functionary at the corporation.
Striking employees had been ordered to hand over important files and documents to the concerned person in the department before joining the strike.
They were also warned that strict action, including suspension, will be taken against those who fail to hand over charge.
“Functioning of the revenue department is 100 per cent as very few employees are participating in the strike. Service to the public has not been affected and necessary measures were taken to ensure this,” the source added.
SFI activists entered the corporation office compound by force and pulled down the flag-post of the non-striking employees union, which resulted in a clash between the two. Police removed the SFI workers later.
Earlier, the SFI activists of Maharaja’s College and Law College took out a march to Kanayannur taluk office and Kerala Water Authority office.
