Corruption probe may begin soon
The Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation are likely to begin scrutinising the documents pertaining to various allegations of corruption in the run up to the Commonwealth Games.
Besides the several cases of alleged corruption, which had come to the notice of the CVC, several other cases like that of the falling of the foot overbridge and quality of construction and finishing work at the Games Village are also under the scanner of the Central agencies.
According to sources in the Central agencies, “There are also at least 20 contracts related to the supply of materials to the Games venues are also being scrutinised by the probe agencies. Available reports with the agencies confirm that “technical criteria” as well as the list of “approved vendors” were blatantly violated by the Organising Committee and other construction agencies. The ED is also scrutinising the details of the payments made to an Australian firm Sports Marketing And Management (SMAM) by the OC. According to sources, the ED is already probing the shareholding pattern of a subsidiary of SMAM, which had bagged the CWG contract for getting sponsorship for the Games.
“The ED has already requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to inform it whether or not the OC had taken its permission to carry out the transactions with the London-based A M Films and the Australian company SMAM in connection with Queen Baton’s Relay and sponsorship commission, respectively,” sources said.
The transactions for AM Films, which has been allegedly paid `3.5 crores and an additional amount of `25,000 every month since last year, were reportedly carried out through Royal Bank of Scotland, sources said.
