Council in dock over Kochi flyover work
Kochi: The city corporation has landed itself in the dock after mayor Tony Chammany moved a resolution in the council recently seeking Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) fund for the four flyover projects in the city. These were projects already approved by the state government.
At a recent council meeting, the mayor presented a resolution seeking the council’s approval for submitting mega developmental projects in the city, including the flyovers, to get funds under JNNURM. The council’s clearance is required for the civic body to move ahead with its projects.
However, public works minister V.K Ebrahim Kunju told Deccan Chronicle that the city corporation’s move would only create confusion over the implementation of the flyover project. “The projects have already been approved by the state government.
The corporation’s proposal will delay the construction of flyovers,” he added. The mayor’s resolution recommended that the proposal for three flyovers at Kundannoor, Vyttila and Palarivattom worth Rs238-crore should be submitted to the Centre to get the benefit of additional funds under JNNURM.
As per the detailed project report, Vyttila flyover will cost Rs. 93 crore, while the estimated expenses for Kundannoor and Palarivattom are Rs 78 crore and Rs 67 crore respectively.
