Court acquits Qayyum ShaikhCourt acquits Qayyum Shaikh

In yet another jolt to the Mumbai police, a prime suspect in the murder case of music baron Gulshan Kumar — Abdul Qayyum Shaikh — was acquitted by the Sewri fast track court on Wednesday. Shaikh, who was first deported from Dubai three years ago, was considered as the main conspirator in Kumar’s murder case by the Mumbai crime branch.
However, the sessions court acquitted Shaikh due to lack of evidence, as the crime branch had failed to prove any of the charges levelled against him. The sessions court observed that the prosecution had failed to prove its case. The trial began in April 2010 with the prosecution examining nine witnesses against him. Kumar was killed by three persons outside a temple on August 12, 1997. According to the prosecution, Shaikh, a close aide of gangster Abu Salem, was one of the conspirators, who attended the meetings in Dubai, where the plot to kill Kumar was hatched. The meeting, which took place in the office of Anees Ibrahim (brother of Dawood Ibrahim), was also attended by Salem and music composer Nadeem Saifee. Further, the prosecution states that Shaikh had also arranged for the weapons.

The communally sensitive textile town of Malegaon was tensed on Wednesday after six cows were found lying dead on a roadside. There were violent protests by some organisations against the incident, claiming that cows were deliberately “slaughtered” on the day of Ashadi Ekadashi, which is considered to be an auspicious day by Hindus. However, the police claimed that cows had died due to suffocation.
There was a volatile situation in Malegaon after six dead cows were found on the Malegaon-Manmad Road in the morning. Some Hindu organisations, including the Shiv Sena, blocked the Malegaon-Manmad Road as well as the Mumbai-Agra National Highway for nearly two-and-half hours in protest of the incident.
The protesters burnt tyres, held a rasta roko and even pelted stones on some vehicles.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
