Court asks for fresh medical report on Morani
The Delhi high court on Thursday directed Tihar Jail authorities to submit fresh medical report on Cineyug Films founder Karim Morani, who is in jail for alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum case and is seeking interim bail.
Justice Ajit Bharihoke said: “Concerned jail superintendent, Tihar, and medical superintendent of the concerned hospital where Morani is getting treatment are directed to submit a detailed report on medical condition of the petitioner within two days.” The court has fixed the next hearing for June 27. The court issued the direction after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the court that the jail authorities declined to give information regarding Morani’s medical condition.
“CBI is directed to verify the facts and submit the report on medical condition within two days,” the court said. “Meanwhile, concerned jail superintendent is directed to ensure proper medical treatment to Morani as per advice of the treating doctors of concerned government hospital,” said the court. A special CBI court ordered arrest of Morani, named co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, after dismissing his bail plea May 30. He first appeared in the court May 24, a day after his anticipatory bail was dismissed.
The CBI named Morani a co-conspirator in a charge sheet after it traced an illegal money trail of Rs 214 crores in the scam. Defence counsel Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Morani, 52, said that he is suffering from various ailments for the last 31 years. Luthra said Morani had undergone angioplasty in 1991, 1993 and 1997 and had an open heart surgery in 2007. “Morani had received a sixth bypass graft and required reboring of his two major vessels. He had also been advised complete rest due to chest pain,” said the petition. “My client company is a big name in the field of music and entertainment. He has done a perfectly legal commercial transaction,” Luthra’s petition stated.
