CPM discusses draft resolution

The CPI(M) central committee on Saturday discussed the contours of the draft resolution for the next party congress which will be held in Kerala in the first week of April in 2012. On Friday, the party’s politburo meeting was held.

This is the first time that former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is attending politburo and central committee meetings since the Left Front’s ignominious exit from power in Bengal. Party general secretary Prakash Karat and Mr Bhattacharjee both agreed that the people turned against the party because of the mistakes of the leaders and the cadres.
Mr Karat admitted some “time servers” had infiltrated the party because it had been in power for over three decades and this had to be corrected. Mr Bhattacharjee admitted his government made some mistakes in its land acquisition policy. “Mr Karat and Mr Bhattacharjee sank their differences and agreed to work to rejuvenate the party organisation,” a central committee member said. The rejuvenation of the party organisation and galvanisation of the cadres are the biggest challenges before the CPI(M) leadership.
After the change of guard in the state, CPI(M) workers had been systematically targeted by Trinamul Congress supporters.
“Our cadres are totally demoralised and our primary responsibility is to again galvanise them. For this, we will have to first set our own house in order,” the central committee member said.
In the party congress, the party leaders are likely to discuss the plans for the evolution of a new Left which will be more in consonance with the changed times.
On the first day of the central committee meeting, Mr Karat and his colleagues also discussed the various bills like the Lokpal Bill, the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill et al.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
