CPM leaders meet to review failure
The CPI(M) politburo met on Monday to analyse the causes for the poll setback. West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee did not attend the meeting which analysed the poll results. West Bengal CPI(M) secretary Biman Bose dismissed reports on Mr Bhattacharjee opting out of politburo taking responsibility for the poll drubbing. “These are all rumours. It is concocted and manufactured,” Mr Bose said.
Responding to questions on whether mistakes at the “local’’ or “national’’ level were responsible for the Left’s defeat, Mr Karat pointed out that these were state Assembly polls and the state units will analyse the causes for the reverses.
Brushing aside criticism that the CPI(M) central leadership’s decisions such as withdrawal of support to the UPA-I and efforts to cobble up a Third Front in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls had allowed its arch rival Trinamul Congress to align with the Congress and finally defeat the Left Front, he said, “We are looking into all matters. Give us time. Since these were state Assembly elections, the review will be done by the state committees and then the party central committee will meet on June 11-12 to reach a final conclusion,” he said.
Mr Karat conceded that there is a need to “reconnect’’ with the people in Bengal who have been “alienated’’ for various reasons. “It is evident that people have opted for a change and the circumstances that led to this mood among the people should be properly assessed,” he said, adding that the situation will be examined seriously and necessary steps taken to overcome shortcomings. He also said there were shortcomings in the political, governmental and organisational spheres which need to be corrected and the meeting will analyse all these factors.
